Quality Education

Gray's interest in education--and particularly in making it better--goes back nearly 15 years.

His first book, Quality Education, examined how 'industrial' quality improvement concepts could translate to educational use. It was one of the first books to apply continuous quality improvement principles to education's problems and processes, using primarily the approach Dr. W. Edwards Deming took with commercial applications. One reviewer wrote,

I was completely absorbed by Quality Education ... . I found the concluding chapter on leaders to be very inspiring. (Rebecca Pilver, Second Grade Teacher, Somers, Connecticut)

Unfortunately, book sales did not match the initial enthusiasm. It sold a brisk number in the first few years, was used in a few college courses, and can still be found in some libraries. The book is now out of print.

Along with writing the book, Gray worked with several schools and school districts, spoke at a few conferences, and produced a handful of other works on the subject of improving education. The highlight was participating in a Congressional Forum on Quality in Education. Although Gray isn't working with national educational organizations these days (he gave up his seat on the Board of Directors of Global Education Motivators in February 2006), he still takes a deep interest in educational matters. In late 2006 he began as a substitute teacher in the Wake County Public Schools, and would like eventually to teach regularly.

Gray still thinks about revising the book and re-issuing it, but the time for that hasn't come yet.
