Shoot First, Ask Questions Later?

I attended an interesting presentation on space warfare over Labor Day weekend, which raised a new question in my mind: in the realm of space warfare, assuming speed-of-light methods of detection and very much slower methods of maneuver (and destruction, for now), would "shoot first, ask questions later" be the best way to guarantee success?
